Evaluation of Heterogeneous Catalytic Ozonation Process for the Removal of Micropollutants from Water/Wastewater: Application of a Novel Pilot-Scale Continuous Flow System

The present study evaluates the removal of micropollutants from water/wastewater contaminated sources through application a heterogeneous catalytic ozonation process, using pilot-scale continuous operation unit, composed membrane module for diffusion and effective dilution ozone into liquid phase to be treated plug flow reactor/continuous stirred tank reactor (PFR/CSTR) contact system in series, where catalyst is recirculated dispersion mode. solid materials tested as catalysts are natural calcined zeolite, Bayoxide alumina, whereas examined micropollutants, used this case probe compounds, p-chlorobenzoic acid (p-CBA), atrazine, benzotriazole carbamazepine. A high-performance chromatography was determine micropollutants. In p-CBA, an ozone-resistant compound, addition found significantly enhance its degradation rate, leading >99% under optimum defined conditions, i.e., terms concentration, pH, temperature, process time. On other hand, different introduction reduce micropollutant, when compared with single ozonation, indicating importance specific affinity between pollutant material catalyst. Benzotriazole, moderately ozone-reactive compound degraded by more than 95% all experimental conditions pilot while carbamazepine, highly completely removed even during first stage treatment (i.e., at contactor). When increasing pH value (in range 6–8) time, performance also improved.
